I was ready to kick back with a cigarette and a drink. Within this one day, Flintlock and I had flown two early morning flights to get into Rome from Dixie, the final and third flight was from Rome onto the Island of Sicily. Midnight in Catania marked the starting point of our two hundred plus mile drive to the Villa Rosa. In an effort to unwind I wanted to review the day's events in my mind.

Flintlock had negotiated in Italian a huge rental van at the airport. The van had taken us at a steady clip deeper and deeper into the Sicilian countryside. We drove pretty near as hungrily as the packs of roving wild dogs we saw in our headlights. There were no restaurants or gas stations, just pitch black as the headlights flashed on infrequent ambitious Italian road signs for example,
'Fork in the road .4 kilometers. Take it.' The speed limits proved to serve as only a suggestions to the seeming candidates for the Italian Air Force that jetted by us at death defying speeds. I was riveted to the steering wheel while these people sped around hairpin mountain curves so sharp you could catch your tail lights in your side view mirror. The whole driving thing made me very nervous.

>THE HOTEL<
The dimly lit hotel was a welcome sight. I now sat enjoying every second of the initial stages of unwinding in an overstuffed chair in our room.

Flintlock, still with his black cowboy hat on wondered out loud "do you think it was our best shot to bring two hound dawgs, a chihuahua, four guitars and six suitcases?" I laughed out loud. Sometimes timing is everything.

I took a fat vanilla candle from my backpack and placed it on the table and turned off the buzzing fluorescent light. I lit another menthol cigarette from the candle flame and said "you can take your hat off and relax". I took a long satisfying drag off my cigarette.

>REMEMBERING NEW VISTAS<

We settled deeper into discussing our thoughts of what the grand moonlit night had revealed. Italy's majestic vistas; eerie golden fire glow deep inside the snow covered Mount Etna, miles of waves crashing like a Verdi opera on the untamed coast. The embrace to our ears of the Puccini Opera CDs Flintlock brought for the planned drive, beauty beyond the pale of reason surrounded us.
The pungent scent of citrus in the clean cool air was as intoxicating as the clear silvery slips of clouds we drove through as we ascended the mountainside roads. Walls of occasional isolated ancient ruins erupted in timeless olive groves that spoke evocatively of long ago untold mysteries.

I could only be lost in the thought of people before me and after me in this paradise on earth. All of this bigger than life experience left me feeling a tad like a child up way past my bedtime.

to be continued : meet along with Ambika and Flintlock someone who proves beauty is an inside job.
